Nomads U13 and U14 DA played against Colorado teams
DA SHOWCASE TOOK PLACE LAST WEEKEND IN ORANGE COUNTY

THIS IS SPECIAL SHOWCASE ONLY FOR U13 AND U14 AGE GROUPS AND ALL TEAMS FROM CENTRAL AND WESTERN PARTS OF USA CAME TO CALIFORNIA TO COMPETE.

NOMADS IS VERY SMALL, I WOULD SAY NON TRADITIONAL CLUB - WE DON'T HAVE A, B, C TEAMS IN EACH AGE GROP - WE ONLY HAVE DA TEAMS! SO ENTIRE CLUB IS 5 TEAMS AND 5 COACHES.
THIS IS NOT ENTIRELY TRUE AS WE HAVE FEW NON DA TEAMS (I THINK COUPLE 2005 TEAMS, ONE 2004 AND ONE 2007) BUT USUALLY THESE TEAMS MOVED TO NOMADS AS ALREADY FORMED TEAMS FROM DIFFERENT CLUB AND NOMADS BASICALLY LETS THEM TO COMPETE UNDER THEIR NAME BUT THESE TEAMS ARE MORE OR LESS FUNCTION ON THEIR OWN.
DUE TO SUCH LOW NUMBER OF TEAMS AND ABSENCE OF ANY TEAMS BEFORE DA AGE (CLUB DOESN'T HAVE U5-U12 TEAMS) NOMADS USUALLY STRUGGLES AT YOUNG DA AGE GROUPS. BIG CLUBS SUCH AS SURF OR ALBION HAVE HUGE NUMBER OF TEAMS AT ALL AGE GROUPS STARTING FROM U5 AND IF PLAYER IS GOOD AND HAPPY HE WILL NATURALLY STAY IN THE CLUB (UNTIL HE IS NOT HAPPY).
AT OLDER AGE GROUPS NOMADS TEAMS ARE HISTORICALLY PRETTY STRONG (U19 DA TEAM ALWAYS MAKES PLAYOFFS (WHICH IS NOT EASY IN SOUTH CALIFORNIA - LA GALAXY DIDN'T MAKE IT LAST YEAR) AND THIS SEASON SO FAR WON ALL THEIR GAMES IN LEAGUE AND CUP).

SO AT YOUNG AGE GROUPS WE STRUGGLE TO GET GOOD NUMBER OF HIGH LEVEL PLAYERS AND THEREFORE DON'T PERFORM WELL.

IT IS WELL KNOWN THAT COMPETITION IN SOUTH CALIFORNIA IS VERY STRONG COMPARED TO OTHER REGIONS SO AT THIS SHOWCASE WE HAD OPPORTUNITY TO COMPARE OUR LEVEL WITH TEAMS OUTSIDE OF SOUTH CALIFORNIA REGION.

AND THIS TIME JUST BY COINCIDENCE WE HAD CHANCE TO PLAY AGAINST TEAMS FROM MY BELOVED COLORADO:
U13 BOYS PLAYED AGAINST REAL COLORADO AND
MY U14 BOYS PLAYED AGAINST COLORADO RAPIDS.

WITH U13 TEAM I'M JUST HELPING YOUNGER COACH SO IT IS NOT MY TEAM BUT I THINK THAT TEAM IS PRETTY TALENTED DESPITE OF VERY LOW SUCCESS IN SOUTH CALIFORNIA LEAGUE (THIS YEAR THEY PLAYED 5 GAMES AND LOST 4). BUT WHEN I WATCHED THE GAME AGAINST REAL I WAS REALLY SURPRISED THAT OUR BOYS HOLD THEIR OWN VERY WELL AND ON MY (VERY SUBJECTIVE) OPINION PLAYED BETTER AS A TEAM, WHILE CLEARLY REAL COLORADO PLAYERS IN MAJORITY WERE BETTER ON INDIVIDUAL BASIS. CONSIDERING THAT WE HAD ONLY ONE SUB AND HAD 2008 BOY PLAYING ENTIRE GAME (WHILE REAL USED FEW 2006 LATE BORN PLAYERS) I REALLY FELT VERY GOOD EVEN THOUGH WE ENDED UP LOSING 0:1. THE MAIN THING TO ME WAS THAT I SAW THE IDEA OF HOW WE WANT TO PLAY - SWITCH THE BALL THROUGH THE MIDDLE, ATTACK USING VERY ACTIVE FULL BACKS.

MY NOMADS U14 BOYS PLAYED AGAINST RAPIDS U14 WHICH IS COACHED BY MARCELO BALBOA - COLORADO SOCCER LEGEND AND MY GOOD FRIEND WITH WHO I COACHED AT RAPIDS DA FEW YEARS AGO. IRONICALLY, WHEN I MOVED TO SAN DIEGO - MARCELO WAS THE ONE WHO CALLED TO NOMADS DIRECTOR AND RECOMMENDED HIM TO LOOK AT ME. SO I'M VERY GRATEFUL TO MARCELO FOR HELPING ME FINDING NOMADS!
SO WE PLAYED AGAINST EACH OTHER AND AGAIN THE STORY IS THE SAME: I THINK IF YOU DRESS ALL 30+ PLAYERS THE SAME AND RUN TRAINING AND THEN YOU WILL HAVE TO PICK UP 11 TOP PLAYERS FOR YOUR TEAM - VAST MAJORITY OF THE PLAYERS YOU WILL PICK WILL BE FROM RAPIDS. ON INDIVIDUAL BASIS THEY ARE BIGGER PHYSICALLY AND STRONGER THAN MY PLAYERS. BUT ON THE TEAM LEVEL THE DIFFERENCE IS MINIMAL AS I THINK MY PLAYERS REALLY UNDERSTAND WHAT IS EXPECTED FROM THEM, WE ARE DISCIPLINED IN POSITIONS AND DEFENSIVELY AND TRY TO MOVE THE BALL QUICK BUT WE ARE NOT DIRECT. WE ENDED UP LOSING THE GAME 1:4 - WE WERE UP 1:0 AT HALF BUT THEN RAN OUT OF GAS AND GOT BEATEN TOO MUCH IN WIDE AREAS. BUT LEAVING THE FIELD I HAD RATHER FEELING OF SATISFACTION AND FEELING THAT WE ARE MOVING INTO THE RIGHT DIRECTION.

ONE BIG THING I NOTICED FROM COLORADO TEAMS (2007 AND 2006, REAL AND RAPIDS) THIS WEEK IS THAT THEY OFTEN REFUSE TO PLAY THROUGH THEIR CENTER MIDS!! TO ME CENTER MIDS ARE THE HEART OF THE TEAM AND THEY NEED TO BE USED AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE!! HONESTLY, MOST OF ALL I WANT TO DEVELOP CENTER MIDS! I UNDERSTAND THAT THIS IS NOT EASY BECAUSE MISTAKES IN CENTER OF THE FIELD (AND ESPECIALLY ON OWN HALF) BUT TO ME THE GAME WITHOUT MID FIELDS IS BORING AND VERY PREDICTABLE. AND AT 13/14 IT IS OK TO TAKE A RISK TO LOSE THE GAME BECAUSE OF MISTAKE!! I REALLY HOPE THAT THIS IS NOT THE TREND BUT JUST ONE TIME OBSERVATION - TO DEVELOP REAL PLAYER WE HAVE TO USE MIDFIELDERS.

I ALWAYS SAY THAT BEFORE U17 RESULT IS NOT THAT IMPORTANT AND THE KEY IS DEVELOPMENT AND STYLE OF PLAY. FOR ME COACHES IN THESE AGE GROUPS SHOULD BE EVALUATED MAINLY BASED ON THESE CRITERIA AND NOT WIN/LOSE RECORD. ALTHOUGH I GET IT THAT NOBODY LIKES TO LOSE.

WAS SUPER EXCITED TO SEE FELLOW COACHES FROM RAPIDS, REAL, PRIDE AND RUSH!! I STILL MISS COLORADO A LOT ESPECIALLY WHEN I THINK ABOUT SOCCER COMMUNITY - HERE I FEEL MOST CLUBS MUCH MORE SEPARATED AND PROTECTIVE THAN IN COLORADO.

NOW I JUST WANT TO REMIND EVERYONE THAT THOSE PLAYERS IN COLORADO WHO LIKE SIQ TRAINING SHOULD NOT MISS THE OPPORTUNITY TO TRAIN WITH SPANISH COACHES DURING NEW YEAR HOLIDAYS!!!
IF YOU WANT YOUR PLAYER TO LEARN FROM COACHES WHO THINK ABOUT SOCCER 24/7 - THIS CAMP IS FOR YOU!!

This is not an easy camp as each day players go through two on field training sessions and 90min of classroom video session (on my opinion extremely valuable tool which to my knowledge no camps in Colorado offer).
Each day field training is connected with video session so players can immediately apply on the field the knowledge they got in classroom. Of course it is not easy and requires a lot of focus and hard work during the day but the effect can be very significant - some parents shared with me that this camp had very significant impact on their player's development.

BUT IF YOU ARE SERIOUS ABOUT SOCCER - THIS CAMP IS FOR YOU!!
